I am pretty impressed with her education activism in the earlier days and her works from the day she assumed the office of the Secretary of Education. Recently, she opened her mind to the Wall Street Journal that she carefully analyses each decision in the department by asking herself how the decision is going to change the life or affect individual students. Betsy continued that if she finds some programs are not giving efficient results to students or not working for their improvements, she would fight and change it.

I am convinced that she tried to reflect what she was visioning from her education activism days. She also started focusing on making education more quality-oriented and consistent to make every student capable of pursuing their ambitions. Betsy believes that regardless of a student’s race, region, and gender, he or she should have the choice of quality education, and that should help them lead a quality life. She has laid out multiple plans to implement education improvement initiatives, and most of them are focusing on the economically-disadvantaged students in the community – something which she was always fighting from her initial days of activism. Due to that reason, DeVos communicated her interests to establish more community colleges and extended financial aid from the Federal government for students.

Betsy has more than three decades of education activism and took part in shaping various education improvement programs. She vociferously campaigned for school vouchers, school of choice, the grading system for schools, charter school system, and more. I have experienced the benefits of these programs and found to be producing excellent results in improving the overall quality of education. It gives added governing rights to school management, but at the same time, performance is broadly on their shoulders. Also, parents get better choices to select schools according to the quality of education delivered with the support of the government. Interestingly, in May 2017, Betsy declared that the country would adopt the successful model of Indiana’s school program.

DeVos is also a well-known philanthropist and served on the boards of many philanthropic and education-based organizations. She and her husband, Dick DeVos, have contributed nearly $140 million to various philanthropic groups as of 2015. In 2015 alone, they contributed over $11 million – many folds of their political contributions. Betsy is also a prominent member of the Republican Party and served as the Chairperson of the Michigan Republican Party from 1996 to 2005. She completed her education at Calvin College located in Grand Rapids. Betsy served as the Chairwomen of an investment group called The Windquest Group, before assuming the role of the Secretary of Education.
